Higher Standards

George Fox University was recently judged by College Prowler to have the tamest party scene in the state of Oregon.

There is an interesting interaction I’ve noticed with young adults who finally get to leave home for the first time. When people get to be on their own, or at least away from their parents, their perceptions of right and wrong. People get the opportunity to make their own decisions and typically end up in two categories. One category is the one where someone decides they can go “party” all they want. No one is going to tell them to go to bed and no one will look down on them for drinking or sleeping around. It is even encouraged.

The other category is what you will most likely experience at a Christian College. See what most Christians have in common is… well… Christianity (Duh). Obvious as that last statement may be, there is a difference in the reaction that you as a non Christian would have to this sudden freedom and the reaction that a practicing Christian would have. When you leave home you lose the direction of your parents and you’re forced to live off of what you perceive as right and wrong. Often this view is shaped by worldly values. The difference here is that Christians have the bible to look to. It gives them an addition place to find standards for living. Most of them have grown up in an environment where the teaching of the bible are everywhere. When they get out on their own and their parents influence is removed, they can fall back on the principles found in the bible to keep their path in a direction that does not lead to sexual immorality or alcohol abuse.

This may seem like the most wild concept ever to someone who is just starting out on their own and don’t see any value in the Christian view of the world but to those who are enveloped in the faith, this is just their way of life.

  1. It is true that when people leave their parents and go to college they get to make their own choices about what they consider right and wrong. I agree with you that people tend to be in one of two categories when this happens and that in Christian colleges people often fall back on the Bible to determine what they believe is right and wrong.
